Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has resigned and fled the country following weeks of deadly protests. In a televised address, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the head of the army, announced that an interim government would be formed and urged citizens to trust the military to restore order.
Thousands of protesters stormed Hasina’s residence in Dhaka, while many others took to the streets of the capital to celebrate her departure. The protests, initially sparked by student-led demonstrations against government job quotas, evolved into a nationwide antigovernment movement. Demonstrators have been demanding justice for the approximately 300 people killed in recent weeks of unrest.
