Following her departure from the nation, demonstrators seized Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's palace.

After weeks of violent anti-government demonstrations, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation, ending more than two decades in the top political position in the nation.

Ms. Hasina, 76, left the nation and is said to have arrived in India on Monday. Joyous mobs flocked to the streets to celebrate the announcement; some even stormed the prime minister's apartment, allegedly stealing and damaging elements of her previous home.

The military will start negotiations to establish an interim administration, according to Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin ordered the release of opposition leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who was imprisoned, shortly after Ms. Hasina resigned.
